Vocdoni is an open-source voting protocol in which voters pay nothing to vote and an election can be run so that nobody can link a ballot to the person who cast it. It started in Barcelona in 2018, spent its early years inside Aragon (/wiki/dao-governance/tooling/frameworks/aragon) , and counts its elections on Vochain, a blockchain it built for the purpose, where FC Barcelona's supporters' clubs, a Catalan political party and the Coordination Council of Belarus have voted. Its successor, DAVINCI, moves the count to an EVM chain as zero-knowledge proofs and adds receipt-freeness, the property that stops a voter proving to a briber how they voted (the three properties are set out on private and shielded voting (/wiki/dao-governance/concepts/voting/private-and-shielded-voting) ). For a DAO reader it is a working anonymous ballot that came out of the DAO stack, whose paying customers today are mostly not DAOs.

From Barcelona into Aragon, and out again Vocdoni, Esperanto for "to give voice", was built by a company registered in Estonia, Dvote Labs OÜ, whose staff were mostly Catalans who started the project after the 2017 independence referendum ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/about-us) ; CoinDesk (https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2021/01/11/aragon-acquires-voting-project-vocdoni-to-flesh-out-decentralized-governance-stack) ). On 11 January 2021 the Aragon Association announced that it had acquired Dvote Labs and its 11 contributors ( Aragon (https://aragon.substack.com/p/aragon-and-vocdoni-join-forces-to) ), and Vocdoni adopted ANT, Aragon's token, instead of launching its own ( Cointelegraph (https://cointelegraph.com/news/aragon-merges-with-vocdoni-to-improve-governance-for-daos) ). The team joined Aragon Labs, Aragon's research and development unit ( Vocdoni, archived (https://web.archive.org/web/20250429114137/https://blog.vocdoni.io/retrospective-2021) ). In 2021 it shipped Aragon Voice, a gasless voting tool for token-based organisations that read ERC-20 balances through Ethereum storage proofs ( Aragon (https://blog.aragon.org/introducing-aragon-voice/) ), and Vocdoni.app, a voting app for associations and clubs ( Vocdoni, archived (https://web.archive.org/web/20250429114137/https://blog.vocdoni.io/retrospective-2021) ). The arrangement held into 2023. Vocdoni's API launch on 14 December 2022 called it "part of the ecosystem of Aragon DAO" ( PR Newswire (https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/vocdoni-revolutionizes-digital-voting-with-the-launch-of-its-new-api-for-more-secure-verifiable-and-affordable-voting-301701788.html) ), and its Decidim partnership release of 1 March 2023 said it was "currently supported by the organization Aragon Association" ( PR Newswire (https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/vocdoni-and-decidim-join-forces-to-boost-citizen-participation-with-secure-digital-voting-301757760.html) ). Between November 2023 and May 2024 the team published a gasless-voting plugin SDK for Aragon OSx DAOs ( npm (https://www.npmjs.com/package/@vocdoni/gasless-voting) ) and an integration of it into the Aragon app, whose repository is now archived ( GitHub (https://github.com/vocdoni/app-offchain-integration) ). The Aragon Association's own dissolution, announced in November 2023, is covered on Aragon (/wiki/dao-governance/tooling/frameworks/aragon) . By April 2025 Vocdoni was raising money on its own account: its DAVINCI release, datelined the Canton of Zug, announced a $1m angel round and did not mention Aragon ( press release (https://macaubusiness.com/vocdoni-raises-1m-to-launch-davinci-the-first-universal-digital-voting-protocol/) ). Its site now describes two entities: the Vocdoni Association, a Swiss non-profit that "acts as the ultimate guarantor of the open-source code and core protocol development", and Vocdoni Global, a for-profit company that sells the service ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/about-us) ). Neither side has published a dated announcement of the separation that this wiki could find, and the acquisition post on Aragon's blog returns 404 ( blog.aragon.org (https://blog.aragon.org/vocdoni-acq) , read 2 October 2026), surviving on its Substack mirror.

How Vochain counts a vote Vochain is a blockchain used only for elections: an organisation registers a voting process, each ballot is a transaction, and the result is computed on the chain and published on the explorer.vote explorer. It runs Tendermint consensus ( Vocdoni, archived (https://web.archive.org/web/20250429114137/https://blog.vocdoni.io/retrospective-2021) ), and block production is restricted to a set of authorities; anyone can run a node to verify the chain, and Vocdoni states that a transaction can be blocked only if two-thirds of the authorities agree ( npm README (https://www.npmjs.com/package/@vocdoni/gasless-voting) ). Voters pay no fee ( Aragon (https://blog.aragon.org/introducing-aragon-voice/) ). On 28 September 2026 the chain id vocdoni/LTS/1.2 was frozen and vocdoni/LTS/1.3 continued from height 8,622,986 ( commit (https://github.com/vocdoni/vocdoni-node/commit/27854c1bf7) ); on 2 October its API reported 11 validators, 294 organisations, 2,721 elections and 135,079 votes ( chain API (https://api.vocdoni.io/v2/chain/info) ). A census is the list of who may vote and with what weight, and Vochain keeps it apart from the ballot. After the LTS/1.3 upgrade the protocol accepts three kinds ( protobuf (https://github.com/vocdoni/dvote-protobuf/blob/master/src/vochain/vochain.proto) ): a Merkle tree of voter keys built off-chain, a weighted version of the same, and a credential service provider (CSP), a server that authenticates each voter however the organisation chooses and signs that voter's authorisation. The hosted Vocdoni App uses the CSP: a voter identifies with member fields and an SMS or email code. Marking a census anonymous makes the CSP sign blind, so it cannot match the authorisation it issued to the ballot that lands on chain; Vocdoni's documentation states that this is a blind signature and "not zk voting" ( Vocdoni docs (https://vocdoni.io/developers/docs/census) ). The zero-knowledge route works on the Merkle-tree census. The voter proves in a zk-SNARK, generated on their own device, that their key is in the tree, and publishes a nullifier, a value derived from their secret key and the election id that blocks a second vote without revealing which key cast it. One circuit serves every census of the same tree height, and each needs a trusted-setup ceremony ( Vocdoni, October 2022 (https://vocdoni.io/blog/anonymous-voting-zksnarks) ). Vocdoni chose to sever the voter from the ballot rather than encrypt the ballot, so ballots stay readable and each voter can find their own in the count; an election can separately encrypt ballots until close ( protobuf (https://github.com/vocdoni/dvote-protobuf/blob/master/src/vochain/vochain.proto) ). Against the properties on private and shielded voting (/wiki/dao-governance/concepts/voting/private-and-shielded-voting) , Vochain offers voter anonymity and optional running-tally privacy, and not receipt-freeness. The same upgrade removed the census types that read token balances – ERC-20, ERC-721, ERC-1155, ERC-777 and MiniMe – and one for Farcaster frames. The commits that removed them state that neither feature was exercised in production ( ERC-20 commit (https://github.com/vocdoni/vocdoni-node/commit/bb2a7200bcca419d1046ab968d506fc73d026e17) , Farcaster commit (https://github.com/vocdoni/vocdoni-node/commit/fc79d1adab) ). A DAO that wants to vote by token weight on Vochain now has to build a weighted tree of balances itself.

Who votes on it The elections Vocdoni publishes as case studies were run by member organisations. FC Barcelona's 1,160 supporters' clubs elected the 30 delegates of their advisory council on it on 21–22 July 2022, and 84% of the clubs called to vote took part ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/fc-barcelona-supporters-clubs-online-election) ; FC Barcelona (https://www.fcbarcelona.com/en/news/2689510/electoral-board-announces-delegates-to-advisory-council) ). Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya put its August 2024 investiture agreement to members on it: 6,349 votes at 77.12% turnout ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/esquerra-republicana-political-party-membership-vote-with-vocdoni-77-12-turnout-in-a-decisive-political-decision) ). The Coordination Council of Belarus, a representative body of Belarusian democratic forces and diaspora, elected its members on Vochain in May 2024 ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/new-belarus-vocdoni) ) and again from 11 to 19 May 2026, when 2,113 people voted while the identity platform in front of it, run by Society22, faced about 24bn malicious requests by Society22's count ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/how-vocdoni-and-society22-secured-the-2026-coordination-council-of-belarus-election) ; result on explorer.vote (https://explorer.vote/process/6b342d99f218567131f63a34cd9ac911f84d2fd4cb92f1b9d55a030c00000005) ). Òmnium Cultural, a Catalan association with more than 185,000 members, ran its AGMs on Vocdoni in 2020 and 2021 ( Vocdoni, archived (https://web.archive.org/web/20250429114137/https://blog.vocdoni.io/retrospective-2021) ). The products aimed at DAOs were Aragon Voice, the Aragon OSx plugin, Onvote, a web3 voting app that from May 2024 could gate a census on a Gitcoin Passport (/wiki/dao-governance/tooling/membership/human-passport) score ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/vocdoni-partners-gitcoin) ), and Votecaster, a Farcaster frame for polls. Vocdoni now labels Onvote deprecated, and the Votecaster, Aragon plugin and census3 token-census repositories are archived ( Votecaster (https://github.com/vocdoni/votecaster) ; census3 (https://github.com/vocdoni/census3) ). Vocdoni's current product and solutions pages do not mention DAOs.

DAVINCI On 24 April 2025 Vocdoni announced DAVINCI (Decentralized Autonomous Vote Integrity Network with Cryptographic Inference), a protocol designed from scratch, with a $1m pre-seed from angel investors including Jordi Baylina and people from the Ethereum Foundation, Polygon, OpenZeppelin, Giveth and Privado ID ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/davinci-universal-voting-protocol) ). Vocdoni describes it as a zk-rollup for voting ( Vocdoni, January 2026 (https://vocdoni.io/blog/from-blockchain-voting-to-cryptographic-voting) ): an EVM contract holds each election's rules, census root and current state root; sequencers collect encrypted ballots, batch them and settle each batch with a proof and its data in EIP-4844 blobs; and the contract accepts a new state only if the proof verifies. Settlement is permissionless: any sequencer can settle any election, rebuilding the state from the blobs of the last settled batch ( davinci-sequencer (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-sequencer) ). Ballots are encrypted with threshold ElGamal, which is homomorphic: encrypted ballots are added together and only the total is decrypted. Receipt-freeness comes from two mechanics. Sequencers re-encrypt each ballot, so a voter cannot prove their choice by revealing the randomness they used, and a voter can overwrite their own vote, with the last one counting ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/from-blockchain-voting-to-cryptographic-voting) ). An election's secret key is held either by the sequencer that issued it, which then decrypts and proves the tally, or by a committee formed through NI-DKG, Vocdoni's non-interactive distributed key generation, in which each node proves its share correct when it submits it ( davinci-sequencer (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-sequencer) ; Vocdoni, March 2026 (https://vocdoni.io/blog/introducing-ni-dkg) ; ePrint 2026/552 (https://eprint.iacr.org/2026/552) ). Vocdoni puts practical committees at 40–50 nodes. In the first mode one sequencer holds the key, so the voter trusts it with ballot secrecy, as a MACI voter trusts the coordinator. A DAVINCI census is an off-chain Merkle tree, fixed or growing, an on-chain Merkle tree kept by a census contract, or a CSP ( DAVINCITypes.sol (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-contracts/blob/main/src/libraries/DAVINCITypes.sol) ). The on-chain census is append-only: members cannot be removed and weights cannot change ( davinci-onchain-census-contract (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-onchain-census-contract) ). Two pilots show the identity side. Ask the World (March 2026) admitted each voter into a per-vote census contract on a Self passport proof of nationality and age, without revealing the document ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/ask-the-world-a-davinci-miniapp) ); the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya ran a student vote in which the university's verifier issued the census proof ( Vocdoni, June 2026 (https://vocdoni.io/blog/how-upc-and-the-davinci-protocol-used-university-credentials-to-run-a-private-verifiable-student-vote) ). The first implementation, davinci-node in Go, ran sequencers against Sepolia ( davinci-node (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-node) ). In September 2026 Vocdoni replaced it with a Rust sequencer that proves batches with the ZisK zkVM, and on 29 September deployed the ProcessRegistry to Gnosis Chain; the contracts repository says the code is "not meant for production use yet" ( davinci-contracts (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-contracts) ). In its first three days the registry recorded 105 voting processes, all created by three addresses, one of them the deployer's ( Blockscout (https://gnosis.blockscout.com/address/0x6702e0141B6b72bCF8C1bdff20A82A35C5502E7D) ). The April 2025 roadmap set token presales from June 2025, then mainnet and a token generation event in July 2026; organisers would pay in the token and sequencers would stake it, while voting stays free ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/davinci-universal-voting-protocol) ). davinci.vote now lists a public launch in Q3 2026 ( davinci.vote (https://davinci.vote/) ), and no token had launched on 2 October 2026. In October 2025 Vocdoni asked Celo's governance for 39,630 cUSD to bring DAVINCI to Celo, offering a share of the future token to Celo's treasury; Celo's governance guardians replied on 23 October that the request sat outside the funding season the DAO had approved ( Celo forum (https://forum.celo.org/t/digital-democracy-on-celo-season-1-funding-proposal-final/12485) ).

Status in October 2026 The Vocdoni App in its current form launched on 27 November 2025, free for organisations of up to 100 members ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/announcing-vocdoni-app-making-secure-online-voting-accessible-to-every-organization) ), and version 2.3 added weighted voting and vote delegation on 19 February 2026 ( Vocdoni (https://vocdoni.io/blog/vocdoni-app-2-3-adds-hybrid-voting-support-weighted-voting-vote-delegation-and-more) ). The Vochain node was last pushed on 2 October 2026, the Vocdoni SDK released v0.10.0 on 1 October, its first release since September 2024, and the DAVINCI SDK released v2.0.0 the same day ( vocdoni-sdk (https://github.com/vocdoni/vocdoni-sdk/releases) ; davinci-sdk (https://github.com/vocdoni/davinci-sdk/releases) ). Vocdoni's stated next step is to move the organisations that vote on Vochain to DAVINCI once DAVINCI is public ( davinci.vote (https://davinci.vote/) ).

How Caper approaches this Vocdoni and a caper (/wiki/foundations/what-is-a-caper) make opposite choices about the ballot. Vocdoni keeps eligibility in a census and lets the ballot travel without the voter's identity, so a voter under pressure cannot be shown to have voted one way, and voting costs the voter nothing. A caper ties the ballot to the account that cast it, charges a vote fee that goes into the caper's own treasury, and mints the caster a soulbound vote token that weights their later ballots and sets their share of the treasury when they leave (/wiki/foundations/leaving-a-caper) ( Voting (/wiki/governance/voting) ). That record has to land in the voter's own account, so a caper cannot offer Vocdoni's anonymity, and it gives no protection against coercion or vote buying that depends on seeing a ballot. For an electorate whose main risk is pressure on individual voters, such as a contested election among people in exile, Vocdoni's design does better. What a caper gets in exchange is a ballot that builds a member's claim on the treasury, so tokens that arrived without a ballot behind them carry no vote tokens and cannot redeem a treasury share, the caper's form of exit rights (/wiki/dao-governance/concepts/membership/rage-quit-and-exit-rights) .
